  76.   ===================

  78. Installer for Windows 95 or Windows NT - 
  79. The 32-bit Acrobat Reader installer will install the following
  80. software for use with Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT: 
  81.  
  82. - AcroRd32.exe, the 32-bit Acrobat Reader
  83. - PDF.OCX, the Acrobat Control for ActiveX, which will enable
  84.   Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 to display PDF documents
  85. - nppdf32.dll, the Netscape plug-in which will allow Netscape
  86.   Navigator and compatible browsers to display PDF documents
  87.  
  88. If Netscape Navigator 2.0 or later is installed on your computer,
  89. nppdf32.dll will be installed in \Netscape\Navigator\Program\plugins.
  90. The installer will also place one copy of the Netscape plug-in in the
  91. directory containing the Acrobat Reader in \Browser\nppdf32.dll. If
  92. you would like to use the Acrobat Reader with an additional copy of
  93. Netscape Navigator or another Netscape compatible browser, copy
  94. nppdf32.dll to its plugins directory.

  97. Installers for Windows 3.1 -
  98. The 16-bit Acrobat Reader installer will install the following
  99. software for use ONLY with Microsoft Windows 3.1 or Microsoft Windows
  100. for Workgroups:

  102. - AcroRd16.exe, the 16-bit Acrobat Reader for use ONLY with Microsoft
  103.   Windows 3.1 or Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 
  104. - nppdf16.dll, the Netscape plug-in which will allow Netscape
  105.   Navigator and compatible browsers to display PDF documents
  106.  
  107. If Netscape Navigator 2.0 or later is installed on your computer,
  108. nppdf16.dll will be installed in \Netscape\Navigator\Program\plugins.
  109. The installer will also place one copy of the Netscape plug-in in the
  110. directory containing the Acrobat Reader in \Browser\nppdf16.dll. If
  111. you would like to use the Acrobat Reader with an additional copy of
  112. Netscape Navigator or another Netscape compatible browser, copy

  115. Due to problems with some Desktop Managers for Windows 3.1, during
  116. installation the Adobe Acrobat program group and the Acrobat Exchange
  117. program item may not be created. By default, the program is installed
  118. in the directory c:\Acrobat3\Read16 and the executable is
  119. c:\Acrobat3\Read16\acrord16.exe.

  121. Installing Quicktime -
  122. To allow the Acrobat Reader to play .mov files, movies or sounds
  123. created with Apple QuickTime(TM), your computer must have the
  124. appropriate sound and video boards installed and Apple QuickTime
  125. software version 2.0 or later.  This software can be downloaded from

  129.  - WEB BROWSER ISSUES
  130.    ==================
  131.  
  132. Known problems using Acrobat Reader 3.0 with Netscape Navigator 2.0,
  133. Netscape Navigator 3.0, or Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 include:
  134.  
  135. Many of the Acrobat Reader keyboard navigation accelerators (arrow
  136. keys, page up/down, etc.) are not available when viewing PDF files
  137. within a Web browser window.  [142844] 
  138.  
  139. If you restart Windows 95 or Windows NT while a PDF file is being
  140. displayed inside a Web browser, the Acrobat Reader will crash. [143314]
  141.  
  142. When large PDF files which have NOT been optimized for page-at-a-time
  143. downloading are downloaded over very slow transmission lines (e.g.
  144. slow modems), the Acrobat Reader may "time-out" before the entire file
  145. has been downloaded.  [143637] 
  146.  
  147. "Open File" links and bookmarks to non-PDF files will not work when
  148. activated while viewing the PDF file in a Web browser window.  [147871]
  149.  
  150. When viewing a PDF file in a Web browser, the destination of an
  151. Acrobat Weblink is not displayed in the control bar even if the
  152. Weblink preference is set to do so. [144784]
  153.  
  154. Movies - PDF files with movies and sounds work inside of World Wide
  155. Web browsers, but the performance is generally unacceptable. Acrobat's
  156. Movie plug-in is best used for disk- and CD-ROM-based applications.

  159. Documents with PAGES larger than 4 MBytes each may have display
  160. problems. [155364]

  162.  
  163. Known problems using Acrobat Reader 3.0 with Netscape Navigator 2.0 or
  164. 3.0 include:
  165.  
  166. When using Navigator's Back button or Go menu to return to a
  167. previously viewed PDF document, page 1 of that document may be
  168. displayed regardless of the page you were last viewing.  This will
  169. occur if the entire document was not downloaded or if the General
  170. Preferences "Allow Background Download of Entire File" option was not
  171. enabled. [122652]

  173. Changes to Acrobat preferences while viewing PDF files within Netscape
  174. Navigator will not take full effect until you exit Exchange/Reader and
  175. restart. [160324]
  176.  
  177. For best results when printing, use the Print button in the Acrobat
  178. toolbar rather then Navigator's Print menu item. [156393]
  179.  
  180. Resizing frames in Navigator may not properly udpate a PDF file being
  181. viewed in that frame. [175222]
  182.  
  183. When you click the Weblink icon from Acrobat toolbar or select any of
  184. the Help > Adobe on the Web menu items, if Netscape Navigator 3.0 is
  185. launched the toolbar and location field are not displayed. Resizing
  186. the Navigator window will cause these items to appear. Netscape plans
  187. to fix this in their 4.0 release. [161815]

  189. If you change Navigator's disk cache while Acrobat Reader 3.0 is
  190. running and a PDF file is being displayed in the Navigator window,
  191. Navigator will crash. [175091]

  193. When you hit stop while a PDF document and then reload, the document
  194. may be displayed incorrectly (with incorrect colors and with the
  195. status bar in the wrong location). [175466]

  198. Additional known problems using Acrobat Reader 3.0 with Netscape
  199. Navigator 3.0 include:
  200.  
  201. When you click on a Weblink in a PDF file or select any of the
  202. submenus of Help > Adobe on the Web, if Netscape Navigator 3.0 is
  203. launched the toolbar and location field are not displayed. Resizing
  204. the Navigator window will cause these items to appear.
  205.  
  206. Acrobat Reader 3.0 and Netscape Navigator communicate with each other
  207. via two plug-ins installed by Adobe Acrobat 3.0; one called EWH on the
  208. Acrobat side in the Reader\PLUG_INS folder and one called nppdf32.dll
  209. or nppdf16.dll in the Netscape\Navigator\Program\plugins folder. 
  210. Opening an Acrobat document from within a copy of Netscape Navigator
  211. which uses an old version of the nppdf32.dll or nppdf16.dll plug-in
  212. may cause your browser to crash.   For best results, make sure both
  213. plug-ins are from the same Acrobat release.
  214.  
  215. Forms / Secure Servers - If a form button submits FDF data to a secure
  216. https server, the user needs to turn on  the Navigator Network
  217. Preferences Option "Allow Persistent Caching of Pages Retrieved
  218. through SSL" for the return FDF data to be processed properly.

  221. The very first time you use Netscape Navigator to submit an HTML form
  222. which returns an FDF file, Navigator will display a dialog which says
  223. you have started to download a file of type application/vnd.fdf. 
  224. Click the "Pick App..." button and locate your Acrobat Reader.

  227. Be sure that the Acrobat Reader is running before you submit an HTML
  228. form which returns an FDF file.  [162661]
  229.  
  230.  
  231. Additional known problems using Acrobat Reader 3.0 with Netscape
  232. Navigator 2.0 include:
  233.  
  234. Adobe recommends that Netscape Navigator users use Netscape Navigator
  235. 3.0 with Acrobat Reader 3.0.  However, if you need to use Netscape
  236. Navigator 2.0, please be aware of the following limitations:
  237.  
  238. Using Netscape Navigator 2.0, PDF forms can be viewed, filled in, and
  239. printed, but they cannot be submitted or received; when the submit
  240. button is pressed, nothing will happen.
  241.  
  242. When a PDF file is displayed inside a Netscape Navigator frame, you
  243. can select the Print Preview... menu in Netscape Navigator 2.0  but it
  244. will not preview the PDF file; the Print Frame... menu will print the
  245. file.
  246.  
  247.  
  248. Known problems using Acrobat Reader 3.0 with Microsoft Internet
  249. Explorer 3.0 include:
  250.  
  251. Using Internet Explorer 3.0, PDF forms can be viewed, filled in, and
  252. printed, but they cannot be submitted; when the submit button is
  253. pressed, an error dialog will be displayed.
  254.  
  255. Internet Explorer 3.0 will not display a PDF file accessed by an URL which
  256. does not end in ".PDF" (or ".pdf").
  257.  
  258. Internet Explorer 3.0 will not display PDF files returned by Web
  259. search engines which support PDF search highlighting.
  260.  
  261. Changes to Acrobat preferences while viewing PDF files within Internet
  262. Explorer will not take full effect until you exit Reader and restart.

  265. When a PDF file is displayed in its own Internet Explorer 3.0 window,
  266. Internet Explorer's File > Save As... menu will not correctly save the
  267. PDF file to your disk.  If you opened the PDF file by clicking on a
  268. link to it in an HTML page, you can save the PDF file to your disk as
  269. follows:
  270.   - Use the Back button in the Internet Explorer toolbar to return 
  271.     to the HTML page containing the link.
  272.   - Click on the link to the PDF file using your RIGHT mouse button
  273.     to display a drop-down menu.
  274.   - Choose the Save Target As... menu item from the drop-down menu 
  275.     and use the resulting dialog box to save the PDF file to your 
  276.     hard disk.
  277. Alternatively, you could use another Web browser to save the PDF file
  278. to your disk.
  279.  
  280. At times Internet Explorer may display an empty area where it should
  281. display a PDF file.  This may occur if Internet Explorer has an old or
  282. bad copy of the PDF in its cache.  You may be able to correct the
  283. problem by clearing its cache as follows:
  284.   - select Internet Explorer's View > Options... menu
  285.   - click on the "Advanced" tab (at the top right of the dialog)
  286.   - click on the Settings... button under "Temporary Internet files"
  287.   - click on the Empty Folder... button
  288.   - click Yes
  289.   - click OK
  290.   - click OK
  291. Then redisplay the open window in Internet Explorer using either the
  292. Refresh button or the View > Refresh menu or F5.
  293.  
  294. If Internet Explorer has been selected as your WWW Browser Application
  295. in the Acrobat Reader's Weblink Preferences dialog and you are using
  296. the Acrobat Reader outside of a Web browser, a separate Internet
  297. Explorer session will be launched each time you click on a Weblink in
  298. a PDF file or select any of the submenus of Help > Adobe on the Web.
  299. (Note: When you install Acrobat Reader, if Internet Explorer is your
  300. primary Web browser the Acrobat Reader installer will automatically
  301. configure it as your WWW Browser Application in Weblink Preferences).
  302.  
  303. When viewing a PDF file which fills an Internet Explorer window,
  304. Internet Explorer's print icon or File > Print... menu will not
  305. correctly print the PDF file.  The Print icon on the Acrobat toolbar
  306. will open the Acrobat print dialog which will allow the entire PDF
  307. file to be printed.
  308.  
  309.  
  310. When using Internet Explorer's print toolbar icon or File > Print...
  311. menu to print an HTML page which contains a PDF file embedded in it,
  312. the printed output will include the HTML page with just the first page
  313. of the PDF file scaled to fit in the area provided for it. Printing
  314. such an HTML page to a Postscript printer with the current Acrobat
  315. Reader release is very slow.
  316.  
  317. If an embedded PDF file is displayed with a toolbar, the Print icon on
  318. the toolbar will open the Acrobat print dialog which will allow the
  319. entire PDF file to be printed.
  320.  
  321. The author of an HTML page can provide a Print button associated with
  322. an embedded PDF file (this button is implemented using a VBScript).
  323. Pressing the Print button will open the Acrobat print dialog.
  324.  
  325.  
  326.  - GENERAL ISSUES
  327.    ==============
  328.  
  329. CD-ROM - If you open a PDF file from a CD-ROM, then remove the CD-ROM
  330. and later try to access that PDF file you may get a system error.
  331. Always remember to close all files opened from a CD-ROM before
  332. removing it.
  333.  
  334. Clipboard - If you select Windows > Show Clipboard and get an error it
  335. is most likely because the CLIPBRD.EXE program was not installed with
  336. Windows. [162165]

  338. Colors Incorrect - If the colors on your monitor seem completely
  339. wrong, try the following: In Acrobat Reader's ini file
  340. (c:\windows\acroread.ini) try changing the line 'IS8514=4' to
  341. 'IS8514=105'.
  342.  
  343. Compaq MGA8.DRV Video Driver - Using this video driver (installed on
  344. Compaq DeskproXL 586 (1024x768, 640x480, 256 colors) with Compaq
  345. Qvision 2000 board may cause Acrobat Reader to crash. Solution: Turn
  346. off the Use Page Cache option in the File > Preferences > General
  347. dialog.
  348.  
  349. Continuous View and Notes - Text notes which extend outside (above or
  350. below) of the page boundary when viewed in Single Page mode may get
  351. clipped when you switch to Continuous or Continuous  - Facing Pages
  352. mode. Solution: Click on the note to activate it and it will pop to
  353. the surface. [148150]
  354.  
  355. Copy Text To Clipboard - When you copy text to the clipboard and paste
  356. it into another application the font is not always preserved. [117507]
  357.  
  358. Full Screen Preferences - Changes to full-screen preferences do not
  359. take effect until you exit and re-enter full-screen mode. [163985]
  360.  
  361. Lotus Notes 3.x - When you open an embedded PDF file from a Notes
  362. database, the Acrobat Reader window may flicker slightly. This is
  363. because Lotus Notes is giving Acrobat Reader OLE instructions to
  364. Show, Hide, then Show the PDF document. 
  365.  
  366. Mach 32 Video Card From ATI - If you are using the MACH 32 ATI card,
  367. be sure to use the 256-color mode with the Color Pallette ON. In other
  368. words, do not use the 256-color mode with the color pallette off. For
  369. Acrobat, make sure the Pallette is ON.
  370.  
  371. Matrox Video Driver - The Matrox MGA 24-bit 16.7m colors video driver
  372. for Windows 3.1 may produce garbled-looking text when used with
  373. Acrobat Reader 3.0. Solution: Use the Windows VGA video driver.

  376. Movie Posters - Movie posters do not print.  [164996]
  377.  
  378. Monitor Colors - If you change the number of colors available to your
  379. monitor you will need to restart the Acrobat Reader for this to take
  380. effect. [158859]
  381.  
  382. NEC Ultralite Versa Linear Driver - Rotated images may display with
  383. artifacts when using the UltraLite Versa Linear 640x480 256 color
  384. video driver. Solution: Use the UltraLite Versa 640x480 256 color
  385. driver. 
  386.  
  387. Number 9 Video Driver - When Acrobat Reader's page caching
  388. is enabled, if you experience horizontal lines running across the page
  389. try turning off the turbo mode in the #9GXE video driver. This can be
  390. done via the Turbo menu in the program "#9GXE Status" available in the
  391. "#9 Hawkeye Control Panel."
  392.  
  393. OLE and Links/Bookmarks/Movies - Links and bookmarks to other PDF
  394. files and playback of external movie and sound files will not work if
  395. the PDF file is embedded as an OLE object. [109027,118373]
  396.  
  397. OS/2 - Acrobat Reader 3.0 should run in the Windows 3.1
  398. compatibility mode of OS/2 2.1 and OS/2 2.1.1.
  399.  
  400. PC Tools for Windows 1.0 - On Windows 3.1 no Adobe Acrobat 3.0 group
  401. is created and no program items/icons are created. See INSTALLATION
  402. ISSUES section above for description of workaround.
  403.  
  404. PhoneNet - PhoneNet does not properly map Macintosh file names
  405. containing upper-ASCII characters. As a result, you will not be able
  406. to open any such files in Acrobat Reader. Solution: Don't use
  407. special characters in file names to be accessed by both Macintosh and
  408. Windows users over a PhoneNet network.
  409.  
  410. Plug-in Names - If you want to remove plug-ins from the Reader to
  411. reduce the Reader's memory requirements, refer to the following list
  412. of the Reader plug-in file names and their functionality:

  414. Windows 95 and Windows NT:

  439. QEMM - There may be conflicts between QEMM, ATI Mach 64, and Acrobat
  440. Reader 3.0. Updating to QEMM 8.0.1 fixes this. See

  443. QuickTime 2.1.x - Some older QuickTime movies (circa 1991 or earlier)
  444. may not work properly because their poster images cannot be extracted
  445. by the current QuickTime system software. A potential solution is to
  446. process the movie with Apple's Internet Movie tool. See Apple's
  447. QuickTime website at http://quicktime.apple.com/qt/qthome.html or
  448. http://quicktime.apple.com/qt/sw/sw.html for more details. [174670]

  450. Smooth Fonts and Monochrome Images - Font smoothing (antialiasing) is
  451. not available for Windows 3.x systems. Monochrome images can be
  452. antialiased in Windows 3.1 systems if this option is enabled (File >
  453. Preferences > General dialog). Font smoothing is only performed on
  454. Type 1 and TrueType fonts; Type 3 fonts are not affected.

  457. Standard Mode - Acrobat Reader 3.0 does not work in standard mode;
  458. you must be running Windows 3.1 in enhanced mode.
  459.  
  460. Syshook- Syshook is an application that patches the system menus of
  461. applications; it does not work well with Acrobat Reader.
  462.  
  463. Toolbar Buttons - In the unlikely even that you have installed a large
  464. number of Acrobat Reader plug-ins, some toolbar button may extend
  465. beyond the right edge of the screen of low-resolution monitors and get
  466. clipped. One workaround is to remove as many plug-ins as possible that
  467. are adding additional toolbar buttons. [151999]

  469. Windows for Workgroups - The Windows for Workgroups Netware extensions
  470. (\windows\netx.com) have been known to cause problems with Acrobat
  471. Reader's Open dialog, as well as other application's Open dialog.
  472. Solution: Contact Microsoft.
  473.  
  474. Windows NT 3.51 - Make sure you have installed the latest Service Pack
  475. for best results with Acrobat Reader 3.0. Software updates from
  476. Microsoft can be found at ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/. The
  477. following items are known to be affected: printing to PCL printers

  481.   - PRINTING ISSUES
  482.     ===============
  483.  
  484. Printing from within Internet Explorer - See the information on
  485. printing in the  "Known problems using Acrobat Reader 3.0 with
  486. Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0" portion of the WEB BROWSER ISSUES
  487. section above.
  488.  
  489. ===============  Specific Printers
  490.  
  491. Canon BJC 4100 - PDF files may not print properly in the printer's
  492. "Photographic Mode". Solution: Use the printers "Graphics and Text" or
  493. "Automatic" modes. [174198]
  494.  
  495. Canon LBP-8IV - Use the printer's "bitmap mode" for best results.
  496.  
  497. HP DeskJet Printers - For best results, it is recommended that you use
  498. the printer's Raster Graphics mode as opposed to the Vector Graphics
  499. mode.
  500.  
  501. HP DeskJet 500C - This printer has an unprintable area near the top of
  502. the page. Be sure to use the "Shrink to Fit" option in Acrobat
  503. Exchange's Print dialog.
  504.  
  505. HP LaserJet Printers - For best results, it is recommended that you
  506. use the printer driver's TrueType font option to download TrueType
  507. fonts as bitmaps (not outlines). Details for each driver's Properties
  508. dialog is presented below:
  509.  
  510.     LaserJet III - Fonts tab, TrueType fonts section: Select the 
  511.         "Download TrueType fonts as bitmap soft fonts" option.

  530. Performance Improvements - Acrobat 3.0 contains significant
  531. performance improvements for printing to PCL and other non-PostScript
  532. printers as compared to Acrobat 2.1. On Windows 95 and NT systems,
  533. both text and graphics printing performance is improved; on Windows
  534. 3.x systems, performance enhancements are limited to text.
  535.  
  536. TrueType / Printing - For best results, it is recommended that you use
  537. the printer driver's TrueType font option to download TrueType fonts
  538. as bitmaps (not outlines). Details for each driver's Properties dialog
  539. is presented below:

  549. A few PDF files may not print properly to non-PostScript printers.  If
  550. your print output doesn't look right you may want to select a
  551. different printing mode for your driver and try again.  Alternatively
  552. you may wish to print your document to a PostScript printer if one is
  553. available.
  554.  
  555. To change printing modes in Windows 95, click on the Start button in
  556. Windows 95, and then Settings > Printers.  Select a different printing
  557. mode for your driver and try again.
  558.  
  559. To change printing modes in Windows 3.1, the double-click on the
  560. Control Panel icon, then double-click on the Printers icon.  In the
  561. Printers dialog box, click on the Setup button to display the
  562. printer's setup dialogs.  To select the graphics mode you may also
  563. have to click an Options button.

  566. Raster vs. Vector Mode - You may get more consistent results if your
  567. printer driver is set to use Raster mode for graphics. Not all printer
  568. drivers have this mode. [162671]

  570. Windows 3.1 Printer Drivers - The printer drivers shipped with
  571. Microsoft Windows 3.1 for the HP LaserJet III, IIID, IIIP, and IIISi
  572. printers may not work well with Acrobat Reader (and other
  573. applications for that matter). Adobe recommends you use a PCL printer
  574. driver based on the Universal Printer Driver V.3.1.2. Here are four
  575. ways to get this driver:

  577. - Compuserve - Type "GO MSL" to get to the Microsoft Software Library
  578. forum. Download the file named "HPPCL5.EXE". Place this file on an
  579. empty, formatted DOS diskette then from DOS run the file to extract
  580. the driver and installation instructions which are in the file named
  581. printer.txt.
  582.  
  583. - Microsoft's Bulletin Board - Microsoft's bulletin-board download
  584. service can be reached at 206-936-6735. It supports up to 9600 baud
  585. and you should set up your modem to use 8-bit, 1 stop bit, and no
  586. parity. Once connected, there is a menu-driven bulletin board.
  587. Download the file named "HPPCL5.EXE" and follow the same directions as
  588. above.
  589.  
  590. - Microsoft - If you don't have a modem, you may call Microsoft
  591. directly at 206-637-7098 or 800-426-9400 and obtain the LaserJet III
  592. printer drivers on a diskette.
  593.  
  594. - Hewlett-Packard - Again, if you don't have a modem, you may call
  595. Hewlett-Packard directly at 303-353-7650 and obtain the LaserJet III
  596. printer drivers on a diskette. You may also use this number to obtain
  597. the latest printer drivers for the HP LaserJet 4, DeskJet, and
  598. PaintJet families of printers.
  599.  
  600. 600 dpi - If you experience problems printing to HP LaserJet printers
  601. in the 600-dpi mode try switching back to 300-dpi mode or if it is
  602. equipped with a PostScript option, use the PostScript mode for 600-dpi
  603. printing. This 600-dpi PCL5 printing problem does not seem specific to
  604. Acrobat. Documents with various graphic images may not print correctly
  605. to the LaserJet 4 in PCL mode at 600 dpi unless the Graphics option in
  606. the Windows printer driver setup is set to Raster mode.
  607.  
  608. Landscape - To increase printer performance of documents formatted
  609. entirely in landscape orientation to non-PostScript printers the
  610. printer driver must be set in landscape orientation in the Windows
  611. printer setup.

  613. =============== PostScript Printing
  614.  
  615. AdobePS 4.1 for Windows 95 - For best results when printing to
  616. PostScript printers, Adobe recommends you use the Adobe PostScript
  617. Printer Driver 4.1 for use with the Windows 95 operating system.
  618. AdobePS 4.1 provides several features not found in the standard
  619. Windows 95 PostScript driver, such as Watermark printing and greater
  620. support for many popular applications. The driver and installation
  621. instructions are included on the Acrobat Reader 3.0 CD-ROM in the
  622. DRIVERS / WIN95 folder.  The can also be downloaded from

  625. AdobePS 3.01 for Windows 3.1 - For best results when printing to
  626. PostScript printers, Adobe recommends you use the AdobePS 3.01 (or
  627. later) driver. The driver and installation instructions are included
  628. on the Acrobat Reader 3.0 CD-ROM in the DRIVERS / WIN31 folder.

  630. JPEG Images - To improve the performance of printing PDF files with
  631. JPEG-compressed images to PostScript Level 2 printers you can change
  632. the setting of your PostScript printer driver to enable Acrobat and
  633. the driver to send JPEG-compressed data directly to the printer. In
  634. the printer driver's Properties dialog, choose the PostScript tab.
  635. Click the "Advanced..." button to display the Advanced PostScript
  636. Options dialog. Choose the "Pure binary data" option in the Data
  637. Format section. This setting may cause problems with other
  638. applications; if it does, return to the default settings by clicking
  639. the Defaults button. [121344]

  641. Memory Issues - If you encounter problems, such as a "VMerror,"
  642. printing to PostScript Level 1 or 2 printers it may be because the
  643. printer has little available memory (for example, a non-upgraded
  644. LaserWriter, LaserWriter Plus, LaserWriter II NT or NTX). There are
  645. two potential solutions to this problem: 1/In the General Preferences
  646. dialog (select from the File > Preferences menu) you may choose to use
  647. Serif only or Sans only for font substitution. This frees up additional
  648. memory in the printer and chances are your document will print
  649. successfully. 2/The other option is to purchase more memory for your
  650. printer.
  651.  
  652. Apple Personal LaserWriter NT - If you are using an Apple Personal
  653. LaserWriter NT printer that has not been upgraded to a Personal
  654. LaserWriter NTR, Acrobat Reader won't be able to print substitute
  655. fonts. Contact your Apple dealer for information on upgrading your
  656. printer.

  660. READER WITH SEARCH
  661. ==================
  662. The Acrobat Search plug-in allows searches of text in PDF files on a
  663. local hard disk or CD-ROM or across a local area network.  (Searching
  664. PDF files stored on a Web-server requires a Web-server-based search
  665. engine.)  The Acrobat Reader is available with or without the Search
  666. plug-in.  Acrobat Reader with Search can be found on the Acrobat
  667. Reader 3.0 CD-ROM and can redistributed for no charge.    For known
  668. problems and issues related to the Search plug-in see the
  669. ReadMe-Search file installed with Acrobat Reader with Search .

  673. The following issues apply to Reader with Search:

  676. Highlighting and unexpected words - Using some of the word options
  677. such as sounds like and thesaurus can lead to searching and
  678. highlighting of unexpected words. For example the sounds like feature
  679. is designed to work best with proper names. For other words sounds
  680. like will not always give the results one might expect. Use the words
  681. assist dialog to understand what words are being searched for when you
  682. use word options.
  683.  
  684. Highlighting and proximity - When using the proximity word option only
  685. one occurrence of the search terms will be highlighted in each document
  686. even if the search words occur multiple times. The proximity option
  687. sorts the results list bases how close together the search terms are
  688. in a document. The document is ranked by the search terms which appear
  689. closest together. Only this occurrence of the search terms is
  690. highlighted in the document. The other occurrences are not highlighted
  691. because they did not contribute to the document's high ranking in the
  692. results list.
  693.  
  694. Internal Error while searching - When searching documents which
  695. contain long titles you may get an internal error message from
  696. Acrobat. This message is due to having titles which are same through
  697. the first 63 characters in the title. For example, suppose we have two
  698. documents with the titles: "The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The Lazy
  699. Dogs. By John A. Smithson" and "The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over The
  700. Lazy Dogs. By John A. Smithsun". These titles are 66 characters long
  701. and are identical in the first 63 characters. The dialog will appear
  702. in this instance if the search results are sorted by title. As a
  703. work-around change all document fields (especially the Title) to be
  704. unique within the first 63 characters if their field values are more
  705. than 64 characters long and reindex the documents.
  706.  
  707. Networks - Acrobat Search and Catalog may have problems indexing or
  708. finding documents due to differences in how networking software maps
  709. non 8.3 file and folder names. For example what is seen on the network
  710. by a Macintosh may be different from what is seen by a PC. The
  711. following networks have been used in testing Acrobat Search and
  712. Catalog:
  713.     Novell Netware & Netware Lite
  714.     Banyan Vines
  715.     Sun Select PC-NFS 3.5, 4.0, 5.0 and 5.1
  716.     NetManage ChameleonNFS
  717.     IBM OS/2 2.1
  718.     Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.11
  719.     Microsoft Windows 95
  720.     Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server 3.1 
  721. Other networks may work, but have not been thoroughly tested.

  723. Network server overload - A network file server can reach max
  724. utilization when many users are running broad searches at the same
  725. time. This causes an overload on the server slowing down all other
  726. processes. This occurs when many broad searches attempt to read the
  727. entire index which forces the server to load the entire index into its
  728. cache. As indexes can be very large the caches can be overloaded. To
  729. avoid this problem discourage broad searches such as "*report" which
  730. will read the entire index.
  731.  
  732. No results found - If you are searching for a phrase which contains a
  733. stop word you may unexpectedly get no results found for your search.
  734. For example searching for "nick of time" will lead to no results found
  735. if "of" is a stop word.
  736.  
  737. Performance - When opening a file from the results list it may take a
  738. long time to open the file or in some case the file can not be opened
  739. at all. This problem is caused by using non 8.3 filenames and
  740. directory names with more than 8 characters. To resolve this problem
  741. name your files and directories using 8.3 conventions and rebuild the
  742. index. You can also avoid this problem by checking "add ID's to 1.0
  743. files" in the index options dialog, and using 8 character directory
  744. names for your top level directories. These changes will help search
  745. locate and open files more quickly. When searching for common words,
  746. such as searching for "the" by itself, search may appear to hang. In
  747. fact Search is just taking a very long time. This happens because the
  748. number of hits is so large it takes a while to retrieve them from the
  749. index.
  750.  
  751. Proximity not being used - Proximity is only available for simple AND
  752. searches such as "earnings AND report". Complex searches such as
  753. "earnings AND (report OR analysis)" will automatically turn off
  754. proximity.
  755.  
  756. Search results list / files not appearing - If proximity is turned on,
  757. files which contain the words being searched for may not appear in the
  758. results list if these words are 2 to 3 pages apart. For example when
  759. searching for "income and report" if both words appear in a file with
  760. 8.5 x 11 pages full of 12-point text then the file will only appear in
  761. the results list if income and report appear are on the same page or
  762. consecutive pages.
  763.  
  764. Word options - Some indexes are built without the support for word
  765. options such as stemming or thesaurus. The documentation incorrectly
  766. states that when searching against these indexes with these options
  767. Search will not find stems or synonyms of the search words. Search
  768. will in fact find these even when these options are not included in
  769. the index. Not including these options in the index only affects the
  770. word assistant which will not be able to show stems or synonyms for
  771. this index.
